What’s in Tobacco, New Products,
and the Tobacco Industry
This presentation will provide a review of how
cigarettes are designed and what consumers understand
about cigarette design and how knowledge of cigarette
design might influence smoking behavior. New novel
tobacco product designs will also be discussed
in the context of how these products might play
a role in tobacco harm reduction. Data presented
in this talk will come from a variety of sources
including tobacco documents, tracking of new product
introductions through industry trade publications
and patents, and recently conducted surveys of
smokers in the USA and Australia. An example of
an effort to educate smokers about product design
features will also be shared from an ongoing study
of smokers calling the New York State Smokers’
Quit Line.
