UK NHS Smoking cessation services –
a primary care model
Overview of UK government policy on tobacco control
generally and NHS smoking cessation services in
particular. Some information about the main government
public health white papers and smoking prevalence
targets since 1997. Cessation statistics (4 week
quit rates) from the new services 1999 to 2002.
The contribution of annual service based targets
on prevalence reduction.
Specific information from the county of Shropshire
– the Help2Quit service established in 1995.
Smokers wishing to quit can receive one to one
counselling from trained nurses in every general
practice. The programme has been extended to involve
pharmacies, dental practices, hospitals and work
with young people. Two year data on 4 week and
annual quit rates 2000 – 2002. Quitting
by socio-economic groups. A GPs view of the NHS
services for smokers.
