Smoking will be under the spotlight as the 2nd
Australian Tobacco Control Conference gets underway
in Melbourne this week. With around 350 delegates
from Australia and overseas attending, the conference
is a key opportunity to consider the latest Australian
and international research in tobacco control
on a wide range of issues including litigation
and the tobacco industry, smokefree legislation,
the latest on quitting strategies and methods,
tobacco industry regulation, youth smoking, the
latest tobacco industry marketing tactics and
more
The conference’s keynote addresses from
leading international and Australian experts will
focus on tobacco control as a blue chip investment
to enhance Australia’s health and economic
well being.

• Dr Frank Chaloupka, Professor, Department
of Economics, University of Illinois - on the
most effective economic strategies to reduce smoking
rates
• Michelle Scollo (VicHealth Centre for
Tobacco Control) on why spending in tobacco control
is a blue chip investment for Australian governments
• Dr Michael Cummings (USA) on what’s
in cigarettes, new products and the tobacco industry
• Dr Ann McNeil, St. George's Hospital Medical
School, University of London, on how young people
get hooked on cigarettes and ways to tackle youth
smoking
• Professor David Hill (The Cancer Council
Victoria) on how regulation can counter tobacco
industry marketing
• Associate Professor Ian Anderson (University
of Melbourne) on the impact of smoking on Indigenous
communities
• Professor Allan Fels, Australian Competition
and Consumer Commission Chair on the Trade Practices
Act and misleading and deceptive conduct
• Professor Alistair Woodward (NZ) on the
health effects of passive smoking for hospitality

tobacco industry
