K. Michael Cummings, Ph.D., MPH
Dr.
Michael Cummings is the Chairman of the Department
of Cancer Prevention, Epidemiology and Biostatistics
at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. He
also holds the position of Professor in the Department
of Social and Preventive Medicine at the State
University of New York at Buffalo where he teaches
graduate courses in cancer epidemiology and health
behavior.
Dr. Cummings is a graduate of Miami University
in Oxford, Ohio and holds Master of Public Health
and Doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan
at Ann Arbor. Dr. Cummings has conducted numerous
scientific studies on the health effects of tobacco
including several on secondhand smoke. He is nationally
recognized as an authority on smoking issues and
has contributed to several Surgeon General's Reports
on Smoking and Health, and to an Institute of
Medicine report on nicotine addiction in children.
He has testified as an expert witness against
the tobacco industry in several recent court cases,
including several of the state Medicaid cases
that resulted in the Master Settlement Agreement.
He is currently the Deputy Editor for the journal
Tobacco Control and is author of over 130 published
scientific papers. Dr. Cummings most recent research
has focused on the marketing practices of the
tobacco industry.
