Professor
David Hill AM
Professor
David Hill is the Director of The Cancer Council
Victoria. He is one of Australia's leading public
health researchers, and is widely regarded as
a leading international expert in social marketing
and public health campaigns. Professor Hill, who
received his PhD in psychology from the University
of Melbourne, has authored or co-authored a large
body of scientific articles and reports in the
medical, public health and psychological literature.
In the tobacco control field he is particularly
known for his research on: adolescent and adult
smoking rates; strategies help smokers quit and
prevent young people from starting to smoke; banning
tobacco advertising and sponsorship smokefree
workplaces and restaurants health warnings on
cigarette packs.
He is a Professorial Fellow at the University
of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University
and an Honorary Professor at Monash University.
In 2001, he was made a Member of the Order of
Australia (AM) for 'services to the promotion
of community health, particularly in the development
of cancer awareness and prevention programs'.
He holds senior positions on major national committees,
including the NHMRC Health Advisory Committee.
In 1996, the Federal Minister for Health invited
him to chair the Ministerial Tobacco Advisory
Group to establish the first comprehensive national
anti-smoking campaign launched in Australia. He
is now chairman of the National Expert Advisory
Committee on Tobacco which is responsible for
the National Tobacco Strategy to which all states
and territories committed in June 1999.
